NEEWER TL21C RGB light wand review: the pocket light we never leave behind

By Julian Snare, Caw Caw Films · Updated 18 October 2026

Some kit earns its place in the bag by being brilliant at one job. The NEEWER TL21C is brilliant at five. It’s a hair light, a fill light, a background colour wash, a product light and a party light, and it fits in a jacket pocket.

For the price, it’s one of the best bits of kit we own.

What you’re getting, in plain English

A full-colour light in your hand

The TL21C packs 195 LEDs into a stick 22.8cm long and 4cm wide. At 270g it’s light enough to hold in one hand for a whole take.

Every white you’ll need

In white light mode it runs from 2500K, warmer than a household bulb, to 8500K, cooler than shade on a bright day. A built-in green and magenta adjustment lets you match it to other lights or tidy up skin tones when the room’s lighting is odd.

Any colour you want

Switch to colour mode for the full 360° rainbow, with saturation from a soft tint to fully vivid. Neon pink, police blue, sunset orange: one tap on the app’s colour wheel.

Colour you can trust

A CRI of 95+ means skin and products look natural, with no flicker or glare on camera. That’s the difference between a light that looks good in the room and one that looks good on screen.

17 built-in effects

Police car, lightning, fireworks and more. These are useful for music videos, short films and any scene that needs flashing lights you can’t hire.

Control it your way

There’s a clear OLED screen and physical buttons on the side. Or use the free NEEWER app over Bluetooth from up to 50m away to change brightness, colour, effects and saved presets. It also gets firmware updates over the air.

Battery that lasts the shoot

The built-in 2550mAh battery gives up to 140 minutes at full brightness, and much longer when you dim it. It recharges by USB-C in about 110 minutes with a fast charger, and it keeps working while it charges.

Sticks to anything metal

The sides are magnetic, so it clamps itself to radiators, fridges, door frames, car bodies and lighting stands without a single clip. There’s a 1/4″ thread at both ends for a tripod, light stand or desk stand too.

What’s in the box

The light, a USB-C cable and the manual. Use your own USB-C charger and you’re set.

The short version

Verdict: Buy it. Score: 9.5 / 10

  • Best for: actors, vloggers and filmmakers who want a second or third light that goes anywhere, plus colour effects on demand.
  • Skip if: you need one big, soft light for your face. This is a supporting light, not your main key.

Why it’s brilliant for self-tapes

Your main light does the heavy lifting on your face. The TL21C adds the bit that makes a tape look professional.

Stand it behind you and off to one side, set to a warm white at low power, and it puts a thin rim of light on your hair and shoulders. You separate from the background and suddenly the frame has depth. That’s a trick from every film set, done with a light that cost less than a casting headshot.

Or point it at the wall behind you with a soft colour. Casting is watching you, so keep it subtle, but a gentle wash stops a plain wall looking flat.

Why it’s brilliant out and about

This is the light that lives in the bag. It’s small, it runs on its own battery, and the magnets mean you don’t need a stand.

Stick it to a lamp post for a street interview. Slap it on the car door for a night scene. Hold it just out of shot for a moody close-up. Use the effects for music videos: lightning and police lights look surprisingly convincing in a dark frame.

For product shots, run it along the edge of a glossy product for a clean highlight that makes it look expensive.

Specs from Neewer’s official product page.

What we liked

  • Tiny, light and genuinely pocketable
  • Magnets mean no stand or clamps needed
  • Full white range plus every colour, with CRI 95+
  • Screen and buttons on the light, plus a solid app
  • Built-in battery, USB-C charging, and it works while charging

What we didn’t

  • 10W is a supporting light, not a main key light for faces
  • No charger in the box, just the cable
  • A narrow strip of light gives hard shadows unless you bounce or diffuse it

Our tips

Bounce it for a softer look

Point it at a white wall or a sheet of card instead of straight at a face. The light spreads out and gets softer.

Buy two

One as a hair light and one on the background, and you’ve got a three-light set-up with your main light.

Match your whites

Set the TL21C to the same colour temperature as your main light unless you want a deliberate colour contrast.

Save your looks

Found a setting you love? Save it as a preset in the app so every self-tape and video looks the same.

Alternatives to consider

  • NEEWER 660 PRO 2-pack: if you need main lights for your face. The TL21C pairs perfectly with these as the third light.
  • NEEWER TL20C/TL21C kit: Neewer sells the TL21C bundled with a second wand, if you know you’ll want two.

Verdict

The NEEWER TL21C is a brilliant piece of kit. It’s small enough to take everywhere, smart enough to do almost any lighting job, and cheap enough that you’ll want two. For self-tapes it adds the polish, and out and about it’s the light that saves the shot.

Questions people ask

Is the NEEWER TL21C bright enough?

As a hair light, background light or accent, yes. It gives up to 730 lux at 0.5m. For lighting your whole face, pair it with a bigger main light.

How long does the battery last?

Up to 140 minutes at full brightness, and much longer at lower settings. It charges by USB-C in about 110 minutes with a fast charger and works while charging.

Can I control it from my phone?

Yes, with the free NEEWER app over Bluetooth, from up to 50m away. There’s also an OLED screen and buttons on the light itself.

Does it come with a charger?

It comes with a USB-C cable. Use any USB-C charger. A PD fast charger gives the quickest charge.

How do I mount it?

Stick it to any metal surface with its magnetic sides, or screw it onto a tripod or stand using the 1/4″ thread at either end.
